Review: X-Men the arcade game HD

It’s kind of sad that the arcade scene is dead in America. I remember spending many hours and many quarters at local arcades every day after school. There is nothing like being in a dank, dimly lit and smoke filled room with your friends, playing video games and talking smack. One of my favorite games from this era was X-Men. I was a big comic book geek so a video game about my favorite band of mutants was right up my alley. It’s been almost two decades but now Konami has resurrected this gem and I couldn’t be happier.

X-Men arcade, for those that don’t already know, is a side scrolling beat em up game like Final Fight and Streets of rage. You can select one of six X-men. The roster includes Cyclops, Wolverine, Colossus, Dazzler, Storm and everyone’s favorite (at least he’s mine) Nightcrawler. As is usual in the world of the X-Men, Magneto is causing trouble and it’s up to the X-people to stop him. This game is a pretty good snap shot of what the X-Men were all about in the late 80s. It’s fun to see the old costumes again and to see just how stereotypically 80s Dazzler was. Jeez. I haven’t kept up with current X-Men comics much so I wonder if Dazzler is running around wearing suits made out of meat or whatever it is that today’s pop stars wear.

X-men arcade is, to put it simply, pretty awesome. You and up to five of your buddies can get together and wail on an endless horde of Sentinels, Mandroids, Mutates and members of the Brotherhood of evil Mutants. The enemies aren’t really hard to beat but the sheer volume of them makes things pretty hectic. Being that this game was originally a quarter muncher, the foes are really cheap and will kill you fast. If you play the Japanese version of the game, you’ll get energy pills to revitalize your health and mutant powers but you’ll still die a lot. This game was meant to steal your money after all. Thankfully you have unlimited continues. On a side note, being that I am an old school arcade gamer, every time I died, there would be a little part of me that was compelled to search for quarters. The old instincts die hard.

X-Men arcade is a great trip down memory lane 616. The graphics hold up surprisingly well as does the music and sound effects. With the inclusion of online multiplayer, as well as local multiplayer, you and your buddies can team up and bash the snot out of bad guys. Thank you Konami for bringing this game back for all of us old schoolers who remember the days of gaming at the arcade.

  • Fun to play with friends.
  • It’s cool to play as the X-Men from the late 80s.
  • The bad translation is pretty funny.

  • Gets boring fast when playing alone.
  • Sometimes the game is too cheap.

X-men the arcade game HD was developed by Backbone studios and published by Konami. It was released on the Playstation network and Xbox live and is available now for $9.99 (PSN) and 800 microsoft points (XBL). The copy played for this review was a digital copy that was bought from the Playstation network.
