Tomb Raider reaches a turning point.

The Tomb Raider franchise isn’t what it used to be. Back in its golden age of the mid 90s Tomb Raider games were enormous hits and its protagonist Lara Croft was a household name. Although the series had a slight rebound in the mid 2000s with “Tomb Raider: Legend” it just couldn’t regain the prominence and significance it once had.

In an attempt to make the series and Croft relevant again, developers Crystal Dynamics have decided to do a complete reboot of the franchise with the next Tomb Raider game. Much like how James Bond got re-imagined in Casino Royale, the new Tomb Raider game will be grittier, nastier and more realistic. Check out the video after the jump to witness the new and more vulnerable Lara Croft.

Even though the trailer is all CG it gives us a feel for what the new game will be all about. Gone are the over the top acrobatics, monsters and…ahem…bust size in order to present a more relatable main character and hopefully a more gripping and compelling story.

The new Tomb Raider game will not be out until the fall of 2012 so hopefully we will see some gameplay during E3.
