E3 2011: Sony press conference impressions

Posted: June 7, 2011 by E-mann in REVIEWS

Fresh off the whole hacking fiasco and PSN outage, a humbled Jack Tretton took the stage and personally apologized for the inconvenience the whole situation caused. For a lot of people Sony has the most to prove with this press conference. Was Sony able to do enough to regain their reputation? Read on to find out.

The first game to be shown is the highly anticipated Uncharted 3: Drake’s deception. The section being demoed was never seen before and took place on a ship in the middle of the ocean. Drake is sneaking around on what looks like a cruise ship that is rocking and swaying in a huge storm. The sequence looks amazing. Everything on the boat reacts to the swaying, even Drake. In one instance Drake passes a pool and even the water in the pool reacts to the swaying and direction of the boat. The demo also shows off some of Drake’s new stealth take downs. Further on in the demo Drake gets spotted and is almost captured but he suddenly escapes and inadvertently causes the ship to start sinking. The water physics are a sight to behold as the ship immediately starts to fill with water and flips sideways. Drake is forced to swim for his life. At some point he is trapped underwater by some debris but he escape only to find himself being chased by a huge wave of water. In other Uncharted 3 news, the multiplayer beta will be going live June 28. Also in a Subway promotion people will have the ability to win early access to the fill multiplayer a week before the game is released. After the announcements were over Sony showed a new trailer which showcased some of the awesome new set pieces in Uncharted 3.

Next up was Resistance 3. Resistance 3 seems to be shaping up really well. You would expect nothing less from Insomniac games. Not for nothing though I’m not too excitement for this game. Don’t get me wrong, the game looks awesome but the Resistance series never sparked an interest in me. For fans of the PS Move, Resistance 3 is move enabled. There will be a special bundle that comes with the PS Eye, PS Move controller and machine gun peripheral to attach the Move to.

God of War Origins and Ico, Shadow of the Colossus HD collections were announced. God of War Origins has the HD versions of Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta. Both games will be 3D enabled, come on one blu-ray disk and be released this September.

In an effort to make 3D gaming affordable, Sony announced a 24inch HD 3D Playstation TV and affordable 3d glasses.  The TV allows for simultaneous coop on the same screen so there’s no need for split screen. The 3D glasses retail for 69.99 and the 3D TV will have a special bundle that comes with Resistance 3, 3D glasses and an HDMI cable for $499.99

2k games announced NBA 2012 and that it will have move support. The game looks great graphics wise even though I am not a big fan of basketball or sports games.

Medieval Moves: Dead Man’s Quest was demoed. Medieval Moves is a fun looking title which kind of looks like the old Move tech demos turned into a game.

Infamous 2 will include move support.

Littlebigplanet 2 will get added move support this fall.

Light box the creators of War Hawk announced New IP called Star hawk which is a third person shooter.

Sly 4 in 2012 was announced and a new trailer was shown.

Dust 514 was announced. Dust 514 is from the creators of Eve Online. Dust 514 will be compatible with the PC version of Eve Online. The game will also have Move support and available for the NGP. The game will be released in Spring 2012

Bioshock: Infinite will have move support and the game will come with the original Bioshock on one Blu-ray. In addition an all new Bioshock game was also announced for the NGP.

Exclusive Saints row: The third content and mode for PS3.

An all new Star trek game based on the J.J. Abrams films was announced. It is an all new adventure and will have move support. The game will also come with a phaser peripheral to attach the move controller to.

The new SSX tricky game will have an exclusive Mount Fuji level on found on the PS3.

Need for Speed: The Run will have exclusive extra cars.

Battlefield 3 will be bundled with battlefield with 1943.

The NGP officially has a name “Playstation Vita” .

The first PSV game to be shown was Uncharted Golden Abyss. The game takes advantage of the touch capabilities on the front and back of the machine. The game looks great but I wish they had a larger view of the graphics.

Next up was Ruin a social action RPG. It looks like a dungeon crawler like Diablo. Ruin will be for PS3 and PSV. You can transfer your data from you PSV to the PS3 by saving to a data cloud.

Mod Nation Racers and Littlebigplanet PSV were announced. The creation tools in both games take advantage of the touch screens and they can both access all the ps3 user generated content.

Wipeout PSV has online play that is compatible with Wipeout HD.

Street Fighter X Tekken for Vita was announced. Cole from infamous will be in the game as a playable character.

At the end of the Vita section of the conference the price and release window was announced. The new handheld will be out this holiday and there will be two types, a wifi version and a 3G version. The new handheld also has a really promising price point for the wifi version $249.99 and $299.99 for the 3G version.

All in all I have to say Sony’s E3 press conference was the best conference today. Instead of bogging down the show with long game play demos. They virtually filled every second with something new or some sort of exclusive. The coming year for Sony looks really promising and I look forward to hearing more about the things that are coming down the line.
