CoolStuffTheBlog best video games of 2011

Posted: January 2, 2012 by Tony Polanco in PIECE OF MIND

If you played video games in 2011 then you know that it was one of the best years the industry has ever had. Developers released some truly amazing titles and we gamers definitely benefited.  Since we love gaming so much on this site we decided to make lists of our favorite games and also decide what we collectively thought was the best game of 2011.

Come take a strange journey with us as we tell you what we thought were the best games of the year.

Romudeth’s picks:

3. Uncharted 3

Although it didn’t reach the heights that Uncharted 2 did, you’ll be hard pressed to find another game this year that will get your heart pounding and make you yell at your TV the way that Uncharted 3 does.  Who needs Indiana Jones when you have Nathan Drake?  Uncharted 3 is the best summer action movie that you’ll play all year.

2. Portal 2

This was the first game that I played this year that screamed “potential game of the year”.  I never played the original Portal but that didn’t stop me from thoroughly enjoying the sequel.  Few games are ever genuinely funny and endearing but Portal 2 managed to be both.  It’s a game with a simple premise that has tremendous depth. Brilliant in every way.

1. Batman: Arkham City

Batman: Arkham Asylum may have been the benchmark for how to make a comic book video game work but its sequel all but destroys it.  It’s not just a great comic book video game but a great video game period.  The cast of characters, setting and writing make Batman: Arkham City easily one of the best of 2011.

LunarDiaries’s picks:

3. Dead Space 2

Dead Space 2 was a worthy successor to the first game, exceeding it in story and visceral feel. The sense of impending doom, established in the first seconds of the game was awesome and frightening at the same time. Probably one of my favorite game of all time, and arguably the best series currently in survival horror.

2. Dark Souls

Really loved this follow-up to Demon Souls.  Dark Souls has such a soul of classic gaming mixed in with the feel of not just an RPG, but the soul of classic D&D.  This is one of the best RPG titles out, period.  Loses a little bit on the multiplayer hangups, but still a great experience

1. Batman: Arkham City

The best comic book to video game adaptation ever done.  This is the bar by which all future conversions should be made.  Not based on a movie timeline.  Better yet, not based on a movie franchise, PERIOD.  The game was simply excellent.

E-Mann’s picks:

3. L.A. Noire

I genuinely love this game just for the plain fact that it’s so different from what’s out there.  I love detective and mystery games but the funny thing is that there hasn’t been many to mention in recent years.  I hope that the revolutions that this game bought to the table starts a resurgence in these type of games.

2. Portal 2

Truly a fun game all around.  It’s been a while since a game has made me smile from beginning to end.  From the single player to the co-op online multiplayer, just a great time all around.  It’s too bad we couldn’t have two number ones.

1. Batman: Arkham City

Batman: Arkham Asylum was a great game but Batman: Arkham City is a truly excellent game. It took everything that was awesome about the fist game and ramped it up to 11.

Honorable mentions:

  • Uncharted 3
  • Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery
  • Gears of War 3
  • The legend of Zelda: Skyward sword
  • Outland

Now before we get to our game of the year, we want to give a DIS-honorable mention to the WORST game of 2011.

Bloodrayne: Betrayal

Bloodrayne: Betrayal is without a doubt the worst game of 2011.  You can read our review to find out how utterly crappy this game was but suffice it to say, this is a game that you shouldn’t waste your money on.  Imprecise, clunk controls, terrible level design and completely unfair difficulty make this a prime example of how to make a video game as un-enjoyable as possible.

And now…dum dum dum DUUUUUM the winner of the first annual CoolStuff game of the year goes to…

Batman: Arkham City!

Okay, you probably saw that one coming since we all picked it as our number 1 game on our individual lists.  The greatness of Batman: Arkham City cannot be overstated.  For years, all we’ve wanted was a decent comic book video game but not only was Batman: Arkham City THE BEST comic book game but it’s also a game that beats out anything else out there in 2011.  Rocksteady studios should be commended for accomplishing such a stellar feat. Batman: Arkham City is an instant classic that will be talked about for ages.
