The day that some said would cause shock waves throughout the gaming industry is finally here with the Metal Gear 25th Anniversary Press Event. Did all the announcements live up to all the hype ? We shall see.
The first thing to be announced was the Metal Gear Solid movie. The film will be produced by Sony Colombia pictures and Avi Arad. Avi Arad’s previous producer credits include Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, and Iron Man. The film at this point is in development and no director, writer or cast was announced.
Next we have a new social 3D mobile Metal Gear game called Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops. The game seems to be for Gree (a Japanese mobile service). The game looks similar to Peace Walker and will be released in Japan in autumn or winter. Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops will be playable at the Tokyo Games Show. No word on there being a Western release.
New footage of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was shown. Kojipro says “the gameplay sprang from Metal Gear’s stealth heart, but evolved in a completely different direction.” The footage showed a fair amount of gameplay from the new game and includes a new snippet at the end which has a female voice saying “hisashiburi da ne” – “it’s been a while” – Which may suggest the return of a known character. A series of character profiles were also shown with a mysterious silhouetted female with a conveniently pixellated name was shown among the games characters. Revengeance will be on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in February 2013.
A range of Metal Gear-branded merchandise was announced. A Revengeance-themed Seiko watch designed by Yoji Shinkawa; a Swarovski Foxhound iPhone cases; New Uniqlo t-shirts, hoodies and long underwear; Hot toys and Playarts Kai action figures; toys; pins; Cibi key-chains; lunch boxes; phone straps; hats; a soundtrack collection; and an 800 page Metal Gear Solid art book in a special case. No word on if any of the products shown with be available in the west.
Finally the public unveiling of the FOX Engine and the debut of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeros. Ground Zeros will apparently be an open world game. The footage that that they were running was all real time and was running on current gen PC specs. No word yet on what platforms this will be on or if they will be next gen or current gen. There is also no release date at this time. It is not known if this footage is the same that was shown behind closed doors at previous events because reporters were conveniently told not to tweet or show any images of it.
All in all this not a terribly amazing showing. We wish we could have shown more but unfortunately images and more detailed info was a little sparse. Hopefully Pax Prime and TGS will have more Info.
